Ben Woodburn joined Liverpool's Academy at eight years old. He participated in Liverpool's pre-season matches in 2016/17 and scored in two consecutive friendlies, against Fleetwood Town and Wigan Athletic. The Welshman, who can play across the forward line, made his competitive first-team debut when he came on as a substitute in the last few minutes of Liverpool''s 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League on 26 November 2016. Woodburn also came off the bench in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Leeds in the League Cup three days later, scoring his team's second goal and thus becoming the youngest-ever Liverpool scorer at 17 years, 45 days old, beating Michael Owen's record who was 17 years, 143 days old when he scored his first goal, against Wimbledon in May 1997.
In 2017/18 Woodburn featured mainly for the under 23's and was named captain for the UEFA Youth League campaign. He made only two senior appearances but did earn call ups by the Wales senior squad, scoring the only goal on his debut against Austria on 2 September 2017. On 1 August 2018 Woodburn joined Championship side Sheffield United on loan for the season to continue his development. However this did not go as hoped and after just eight appearances, seven of them before the end of September, the spell was cut short in January 2019. Other loan options were considered but it was felt none could give him the game time needed so he instead remained at Liverpool to continue development with the under 23's.
On 30 July 2019 Woodburn joined Oxford United of League One on a season-long loan, telling BBC Radio Oxford "I think it is a good fit for me in my career at this moment in time, I think its a stepping stone that I need to push on." Unfortunately a fractured foot sustained in October ruled him out for the rest of the regular campaign, although he did feature in the play-offs, where Oxford lost to Wycombe in the final. Woodburn was loaned out to a League One side again for 2020/21, joining Blackpool on 16 October 2020. The deal was intended to be for the season but after just three league starts the Tangerines opted to terminate the loan in January 2021.Woodburn was an unused substitute for Liverpool's first two league games of 2021/22 before a season long loan deal was agreed with Scottish Premiership side Hearts. He scored three times in 28 league appearances and was on the bench for the Scottish Cup final defeat to Rangers.
At the expiry of his Reds contract in the summer of 2022 Woodburn went on a two week trial at Preston North End. After impressing in his first week and scoring in a pre season friendly, a one year deal was agreed with an option for a second. During 2022/23 he made 38 appearances in the league, 26 of them as substitute, which triggered the clause for an extension of his contract for another year.
