Player Profile
Cameron Brannagan was spotted by Liverpool scouts in 2005 playing in Cadishead, a suburb of Salford in Greater Manchester. Any early allegiance to the club playing in red shirts in the city he grew up in was soon lost once he (and his father) realised what wonderful facilities Liverpool Football Club had and how impressive their coaching schemes were. United’s loss was definitely Liverpool’s gain and young Brannagan has been involved with Liverpool’s Academy since before his ninth birthday.
He progressed smoothly through a number of different age-groups until he was given his debut for the club’s Under-18 team when still a few weeks short of his sixteenth birthday. Promotion to the Under-21 team was inevitable and the midfielder quickly became a regular in that team and also showed that he is capable of contributing to the goal-scoring figures. Although midfield does appear to be his best position, he is a versatile footballer and has also been used at the Academy as a right-back and a winger. The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract in November, 2013 and was an unused substitute in an FA Cup 3rd round tie with Oldham the following January.
Although Brannagan was not picked for any more first-team squads in 2013/14 he did come on as a second half substitute in a post season friendly against Shamrock Rovers in Dublin .In 2013-14 he also played nineteen times for the under 21s, scoring four goals and also appeared in four FA Youth Cup matches. In 2014/15 he was an unused substitute five times in the second half of the season finished it still awaiting a competitive debut.
The young midfielder, just 19 years old shortly before the end of the 2014/15 season, pushed himself into contention for a first-team place and was rewarded with a place on the substitutes' bench five times between the end of February and the end of April. He made his competitive debut in September 2015, coming on as a substitute for Jordan Rossiter with eleven minutes remaining of the opening Europa League group stage game in Bordeaux. He got his first start against Bournemouth in the League Cup, by which time Jürgen Klopp had taken over, and was also in the starting eleven for the FA Cup third round tie at Exeter. towards the end of the season he came on as a sub against Swansea in the league, then made his first Premiership start in the final game of the season at West Bromwich Albion. A proposed loan move to Wigan fell through in August 2016 due to Liverpool's insistence he featured in 75% of their games. In January 2017, Brannagan was loaned to Fleetwood Town in League One, having not featured at all so far for the Reds. He appeared thirteen times for them helping them to the League One playoffs. Brannagan moved for an undisclosed fee to Oxford in League One in January 2018 and featuring twelve times before the end of the season. The following season, 2018/19, he started forty games and scored three goals and in 2019/20 he helped them to the play offs, where they lost to Wycombe in the final. Brannagan created history on 29th January 2022 when he scored four penalties in Oxford's 7-2 victory at Gillingham. It was the first time a player had scored four penalties in a game in the Football League's 138 year history.
