Winger Putterill started training at Melwood in the summer of 2006. He was an integral part of the Liverpool youth team that retained the FA Youth Cup in 2007. Putterill was on the bench against Reading in the League Cup on 25 September 2007, but that was as far as he got. He was released by Liverpool in the summer of 2009. The 21-year-old signed with League Two Accrington Stanley in July 2010 after an injury-ravaged career: "I’ve had a fractured spine, a hip reconstruction, cartilage in my knee, hernia operation, quite a few. I fractured my spine when I was playing for England Schoolboys, the under 15s, against Ireland. I jumped up for a header and my feet came from under me. Before I knew it my spine had gone from a knee in my back. I was very worried, it paralysed me for about 20 minutes. But after that I did six months of my scholarship at Liverpool and managed to get a pro deal. My ambition was to make it there but it’s tough at Liverpool, you’ve got to be exceptional."
After leaving Accrington Stanley, for whom he had played in twenty-four League Two matches in 2010/11, Putterill was briefly at Southport the following season but only played twice in the Conference division before being sent on loan to Vauxhall Motors, for whom he did not play at all, not in a first-team match anyway. In 2012/13 his career seemed to be getting back on track at Rochdale. He played in eighteen League Two matches but all but one of those was as a substitute. In January 2013 he moved to Blue Square Bet Premier club Hyde in the Greater Manchester area. But he only played once and was released from his contract at the end of the season. In the summer of 2013 the midfielder moved to another local non-League club, Formby, but stayed there just a few weeks before dropping further down the pyramid with Waterloo Dock in the Liverpool County Premier League. In February 2016 he signed for Marine but left after just two late substitute appearances, joining Aigburth Peoples Hall, winning the Liverpool County Premier League and Zingari Challenge Cup that season and he remained there in 2016/17 before drifting out of the game,
