Player Profile

Guthrie was released by Manchester United when he was at the tender age of 15. He made steady progress at Liverpool and finally was rewarded by a first-team debut against Reading in the League Cup in October 2006. He impressed as a good passer of the ball and a very attack-minded player but five of his seven appearances for Liverpool were as a substitute. After spending March to May 2007 with Southampton in the Championship Guthrie was loaned to Bolton in the 2007/08 season and showed he was Premiership class in his 25 appearances, convincing Newcastle to buy him in the summer of 2008 for £2.25 million. Guthrie made 24 Premier League appearances, scoring twice, as Newcastle were relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2008/09 season. He was, however, more prominent as the Geordies made an immediate return to the top division as champions. Guthrie missed the start of 2010/11 because of a knee injury, but was fit enough for a return in the middle of October. However, he only made 14 Premier League appearances by the end of the season and after being on the fringes of the team again he was released by the Magpies at the end of the 2011/12 season. Still only 25-years-old he signed for Premiership newcomers, Reading.

Guthrie appeared in twenty-one Premier League matches for Reading in the 2012/13 season. He also played in four domestic cup matches. His only goal of the season came in Reading's 4-2 defeat at Chelsea in August 2012. The midfielder played in 32 of Reading's 46 Championship matches in 2013/14. He also played against Brighton in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. The Royals ended the season in 7th position just outside the play-off places. Guthrie passed the milestone of two hundred club appearances during the season. After falling out of favour Guthrie was loaned to Fulham for the final two months of 2014/15 and then joined Blackburn Rovers in time for the following season. After starting off as a regular he fell out of favour and didnt feature all in the second half  except for the under 21s. However he got more opportunities in 2016-17, scoring once in 24 appearances as Blackburn were relegated to League One.

He then moved to Indonesia, playing 29 times for Mitra Kukar in the 2018 season before returning to English football in July 2019 and signing for League Two Walsall on a one year deal, which was renewed for the 2020/21 season. However his appearances were limited by injuries and he left by mutual consent at the end of the January 2021 transfer window. The following May he joined Icelandic second tier side Fram, playing sixteen times and helping them to promotion. He then retired from playing and took up a coaching position with a football academy in Dubai. In June 2022 he was declared bankrupt at Stoke County Court, having racked up over £100,000 in gambling debts.
