Bill Shankly on the signing of Ron Yeats

"Yeats was in the Army and used to fly up from the south of England to play for Dundee United. Mr Sawyer and Mr Sidney Reakes, another director, came with me to see about Yeats, and a Dundee director told me, 'No, we can't sell him.' But on the platform when we were returning to Liverpool another Dundee director, Duncan Hutchinson, whispered to me, 'I be you could get him for 30,000.' A couple of days later, Dundee United phoned to say, 'You can have Yeats for 30,000.' I phoned Mr Sawyer and he said, 'Right, do a deal.' I then phoned him back and said, 'We're meeting them in Edinburgh on Saturday.' He told me to tell Mr Williams and Mr Reakes to go with me. Reuben Bennett came too, and we travelled in Mr Reakes' car. At four o'clock on that Saturday night in July 1961 we signed him.

Big Ron was a fantastic looking man, with black hair. The first time I saw him he was wearing a light-grey suit and I said, 'It should be Hollywood you're going to.' He looked as if he could outclass all the film stars. When he came to Liverpool I got all the press boys and said, 'Go on, walk around him. He's a colossus!' St John and Yeats were both twenty-three, and I said to Mr Sawyer, 'You sack me if they can't play. I'm telling you now, I'll stake my life on it.' And I told Mr Reakes, 'These players will not only win us promotion, they will win us the Cup as well."

New Brighton days: the Merseyside seaside that generations of fans grew up with

19 October 2026

New Brighton began as a Liverpool merchant's idea. In the 1830s James Atherton bought land at the north-east corner of the Wirral, at the mouth of the Mersey, and laid out a resort with his son-in-law, William Rowson. He named it after Brighton, the resort he hoped to emulate.

Anfield keeps its history alive by changing around the game

17 October 2026

Manchester City’s visit on 11 October will add another match to Anfield’s long record. Before the teams emerge, the ground will already be doing what it has done across generations of Liverpool sides: turning a fixture into a shared event with a memory of everything that came before it.
