Player Notes: James Kelso played just one game for Liverpool Football Club in the club's inaugural season on 24th September 1892 vs. Bury. Liverpool won 4-0. He was a promising player and Field Sport gave this account of him in 1892: "Young Kelso is as like his older brother, Bob, in play as he is in features, and great things are expected from him." His brother, Bob, was a famous footballer with Renton, Everton and Dundee. Sadly, James committed suicide on 25th July 1900 in Renton, 29-years old. According to The Courier and Argus, published in Dundee, Scotland: "Kelso, who had just returned from a holiday at the Isle of Man, spent the day with his wife and family. They all returned home about seven o'clock in the evening, and nothing unusual was observed in Kelso's behaviour. He shortly afterwards seized a razor, and, applying it to his throat, cut it from ear to ear. His wife instantly raised the alarm, and the services of a doctor were procured, but Kelso had expired before his arrival. Kelso is also described as a regular worker, and has never been known to have been much the worse of drink." |
