Wadsworth was one of the elite of players who had their caricature and career details on cigarette cards back in the days of old.

Cigarette cards were used as a packet stiffener to add integrity to the paper cigarette packets. When they were introduced in the 1880s they were used for advertisements and it wasn't until later they had various info on various subjects.

In probably 1927-28, John Player & Sons - a branch of the Imperial Tobacco company (of Great Britain and Ireland), issued Football caricatures by "Mac" - a series of 50. Below is Walter Wadsworth's cigarette card.

The text reads: Bristol City's centre half and captain, Walter Wadsworth, had more than one claim to distinction before he made himself popular with the supporters of the Ashton Gate club. He had a fine record for Liverpool in 1920-21, and was captain of the Lancashire club when they won the League championship. Wadsworth, who comes from Bootle, stands 5ft, 10 1/2 ins., and weighs 11st. 9lb. Head-work is one of his strong points, as many opposing and less tall forwards have realized. Wadsworth went to Bristol to help City secure a championship and promotion.

Thanks to Robin Jordan for providing us with the cigarette card and Eric Doig for career details.
