Who the Reds' latest young star is after debut against Swindon

Who is the 16-year-old who made his debut away to Swindon?

All eyes were on Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino at the County Ground for Liverpool FC's final pre-season game against Swindon, but the double-barrelled name of Trent Alexander-Arnold also had Reds fans talking.

The 16-year-old lasted just under an hour - but just who is the Reds' latest teenager?

Alexander-Arnold - previously known as just Arnold - is a 16-year-old midfielder who has been rising up the ranks of Liverpool's youth set-up.

Born in October 1998, West Derby lad Alexander-Arnold was captain of the Under-16s - coached, at the time, by newly-promoted Pepijn Lijnders - before being promoted to the Under-18s.

He soon took the armband there, too, and impressed for Neil Critchley's side, playing twice in the UEFA Youth League - including the defeat away to Real Madrid.

Those performances saw him called up to England Under-17s squad for the European Championships this summer, where they were knocked out at the quarter final stage by Russia.

Arnold has also captained England at younger age levels.

He is expected to be a part of the Under-17s World Cup squad which begins in Chile in October.

Speaking in June, he said: “I can’t really get my head around how big this opportunity is at the moment,” Arnold toldTheFA.com.

“I’m from West Derby in Liverpool, and I don’t know anybody else from my area that has played at a World Cup. It just doesn’t happen to lads like me. I’ll be trying so hard to get there – it would be an unforgettable experience.

“I played for Country Park in the Walton and Kirkdale League. The first World Cup I can remember is in 2006 when Italy won it. To play in a tournament like that at youth level would be amazing.

“I always used to pretend to be Stevie G when I was playing as a kid as he is a Scouser. Everyone looks up to him.

“I don’t think there is any footballer that doesn’t recognise his talent and what he has done for his club and country at World Cups. Now I may get that chance.”
